Santa Paws and River City Cluster of Dog Shows bring cheer to pets at Animal Care Services

By haziqbinarif

San Antonio’s furry residents will have a special somebody to offer them treats this holiday season: Santa Paws.

The large, red-and-white-suited canine visited Animal Care Services on Wednesday with gifts for the shelter’s adoption-ready cats and dogs.

He rolled up to the campus across from the San Antonio Food Bank in a three-wheel Slingshot autocycle with a helpful elf. “Here Comes Santa Claus,” blared from the blaze orange roadster’s radio.

ACS officers greeted the jolly canine at the front gate. Members of the River City Cluster of Dog Shows held up a big banner welcoming the floppy-eared Santa, who joined his “paw-see” to hand out toys and treats to pets at the shelter.

On San Antonio’s Animal Care Services achieves a record 92 percent live-release rate

This is the 11th year that ACS has partnered with San Antonio’s dog-breed clubs to bring gifts to the shelter.

Santa Paws’ visit highlighted the cats and dogs that are available to be adopted during the holidays.

Adoptions require an appointment, which can be made at Dog adoptions cost $25 and cats are $15 until the end of the year. All adoptions will feature dewormer, sterilization, vaccinations and a lifetime registered microchip.

On San Antonio pet stores will sell only rescue dogs and cats starting Jan. 1

“For more than a decade, ACS has worked with the Cluster of Dog Shows to bring holiday goodies to animals at the shelter,” ACS spokeswoman Lisa Norwood said. “We needed to do this not just for the pets, but the community. By engaging with our pets and making sure they have toys and treats, that helps them become more adoptable. This is a fun holiday way to highlight a very important mission to save pets’ lives in San Antonio.”
