Portage APL rescues 9 malnourished dogs from ‘deplorable conditions’

By haziqbinarif

PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio — The Portage Animal Protective League is asking for donations to help nine dogs seized from a home who were living in “deplorable conditions.”

The dogs were found earlier this week. Specific information on where they were found wasn’t provided.

“Some dogs lived inside in filth. Floors were caked in feces and the home was unhealthy for people, let alone animals. The larger dogs were outside and had no water in freezing temps,” Portage APL said.

A few of the animals were so malnourished that their ribs were showing. It had been so long since they were given water, some of the dogs tried to fight each other for a bowl of water at the APL. Most of the dogs have scars on them, possibly from having to fight for food.

One of the dogs was found to have heartworm and some of the others have skin issues, infected teeth, eye issues and other problems. None have been spayed or neutered.

“These dogs are now warm, safe, fed and have a clean place to sleep. We’re glad we could help them before the situation got worse,” Portage APL said.

Right now, the dogs aren’t available for adoption. They need time to heal. And the Portage APL needs your help to care for them—it’s estimated that their basic medical care will cost thousands. And that doesn’t include dental surgery or treatment for heartworm.
