Sunflower the petite pit bull

By haziqbinarif

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland APL Pet of the Weekend is an adorable 4-year-old pit bull mix named Sunflower.

Sunflower is a petite 45 pounds and loves to cuddle.

“She is a dainty girl who fits her delicate name. Although she is little, she is still mighty! Sunflower is playful and energetic once she settles into her new environment. And you wouldn’t be able to tell by her size, but she is very food motivated and loves treats,” the Cleveland APL said. “This is a great thing to help her work on continued basic obedience in her new home using positive reinforcement training techniques. Science has shown that dogs learn better with positive reinforcement rather than aversive methods.”

The Cleveland APL said Sunflower was nervous when she came to the shelter and a bit leery of people but soon opened up. She may be a bit shy and nervous going to a new home, “but with time, patience, a lot of love and a lot of treats, she will quickly become your new best friend,” the Cleveland APL said.

Sunflower is part of the adoption program “I want a PittoPotamus for Christmas” that includes lower fees for pit bull-type dogs.

“We’re all familiar with the song “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas,” but at the Cleveland Animal Protective League, we’re encouraging adopters to take a PittoPotamus home for the holidays! Pit bulls and pit bull mixes are often the most overlooked dogs in shelters, yet these blocky-headed pups make for great family dogs with their funny antics, cuddles, and need for plenty of walking and playtime,” the Cleveland APL said.

The fees for “pittie-type” dogs is currently reduced to $50 and that also includes the licensing fee. Normally, adoption fees are $125 for dogs over 5 months old, in addition to a $21 county license fee.

The event runs from Friday to Dec. 24.

“These adorable pups are the perfect addition to any family this holiday season,” the Cleveland APL said.
