• “‘If anyone is interested, they should sign up now.’ ‘If your spouse asks for something, give it to them.’ Please. I know, I know, we don’t want to signal awareness of gender, but it leads to other issues. One of these is the practice among American social justice enthusiasts for the term ‘Latinx.’ Instead of the traditional masculine singular ‘Latino’ they seek to blur, or delete, gender in the pronoun by replacing the gender marker, which has been getting the job done for speakers of Spanish for at least 10 centuries. Oddly enough, many native speakers of Spanish resent the effort to ‘colonize’ their language.”
